Teacher Training

Initial Teacher Training

We work in partnership with Carmel Teacher Training Partnership (CTTP) to provide exceptional Initial Teacher Training.

Carmel Teacher Training Partnership (CTTP) was established in 1999. After 2 consecutive outstanding OFSTED inspections, CTTP are now working in partnership with St Mary’s University, Twickenham, who in 2024 received their third outstanding, to deliver outstanding initial teacher training to the next generation of primary and secondary teachers.

If you are looking for a more practical, work-based experience instead of the traditional university route, then CTTP is for you. Training is delivered in lead schools throughout the North-East, and as you will be working in a school, you will be much more likely to get a job at the end of your training. In fact, on average, over 95% of our trainees go on to secure a teaching role, many gaining a position before the course has completed.

The CTTP Initial Teaching Training programme will give you the chance to learn from experts such as those from alternative provision and in special schools. The programme goes beyond the set framework to introduce you to important issues like ethics, climate change and sustainability, as well as ways to collaborate professionally. Close links to professional hubs such as Maths Hubs, STEM Science Learning Partnership, Research School Network, and the NCCE Computing Hubs will offer you further subject expertise across all key stages.

The trust has created a culture where early career teachers are valued and encouraged. I’ve been given space to learn, try new approaches, and know that I have people to turn to when I need guidance.”

Graham Harwood
Teacher, Henshaw CE Primary

As an ECT, beginning my first teaching job was very daunting, however, the whole team have been nothing but encouraging and supportive. Everyone has been so willing to help me and ensure I have the support I need - no question is considered 'silly' and I feel valued as a member of the team. I have regular informal meetings with my ECT mentor and the head teacher to check on my wellbeing and to ensure that I have everything Ineed, which is much appreciated, as well as more formal meetings to introduce me to my ECT provider and corresponding requirements. During a period where it is easy to feel overwhelmed and lost, the federation team have welcomed me in, going above and beyond to help me find my feet and grow as a teacher. I am excited to continue my ECT journey with the trust.”

Amy Teasdale
Teacher, Greenhead CE Primary School

My ECT journey at Northern Saints has been incredibly positive and rewarding. From the very start I was welcomed into the team like family, which made me feel valued and supported right away. The headteacher’s encouragement and open-door approach, together with the guidance of my mentor, have been invaluable. I’ve also had fantastic opportunities to work closely with subject leaders, and the trust’s CPD and collaborative culture have given me the confidence to reflect, take risks, and grow into my own teaching style.”
